About The Workshop

Available as an in-house workshop is 'Critical Design' from 'WSUD – Making It Work' by Mark Liebman, a consultant and Director of Sustainability Workshop. Mark has been designing successful WSUD projects for over 15 years with numerous awards from the Stormwater Industry Association and a Green Globe Award from the Premier of NSW and is currently helping Blacktown City Council review its WSUD procedures. Mark is a qualified trainer and regularly presents at conferences in Australia and abroad.

This workshop will expose participants to the more difficult aspects of WSUD from bioretention design to developing a treatment train that works.

Carl Tippler, a consultant and Director of CTENVIRONMENTAL joins Mark as co-presenter, as one of Australia’s leading aquatic ecologists who will round-off this excellent short course by teaching a session on aquatic ecology and water quality fundamentals for designers.

The content of this course is as follows:

Critical Design

Day 1

Presented by Mark Liebman

Introduce WSUD Objectives & discuss a range of development policies/approaches including:

  • Impacts of development on receiving waters,
  • WSUD objectives,
  • Management approaches, policies & their targets,
  • Water quality modelling including choice of climate data, EMC data, indicators, treatment trains,
  • Post processing tips and tricks and making your model defendable using best evidence.

Presented by Carl Tippler

  • Introduction to aquatic ecology,
  • Water quality & riparian health assessment
  • Water quality sampling programme design and methods

Day 2

Presented by Mark Liebman

  • Stormwater treatment processes,
  • Treatment choices – selection tools,
  • Designing a treatment train that works,
  • Constructed wetland design,
  • Bioretention and raingarden design.

The workshop equips participants with:

  • Understanding of the pros and cons, limits and how to exploit typical water quality policies
  • Skills to make their work defendable and stand up to peer review
  • Skills & understanding to determine the impacts of a development on a receiving water
  • Limitations of water quality models – the truth
  • Understanding stormwater treatment processes and how to build a treatment train
  • Skills to wetlands and bioretention systems that work
